Cantonese numerals are straightforward and based on the decimal system. Numbers below 1,000 are similar to those in English.

There are specific words for numbers like 0-10, hundred 百 (100), thousand 千 (1,000), ten thousand 萬 (10,000), and one hundred million 億 (100,000,000). All other numbers are constructed by combining these terms.

Regarding pronunciation, most numbers have a single pronunciation. However, the numbers 2 and 20 can sometimes vary in how they are pronounced.

Pronunciation Rules

Basically, numbers are pronounced from left to right, with the number of that digit followed by the corresponding place value names (e.g., 百 hundred, 千 thousand such as in English).

Note that the difference in place value breakpoints after thousands between Cantonese and English may cause confusion.

Rule for pronouncing 零(0)

  • Omission at the End:
No need to pronounce '零' if zeros are at the end of a number sequence.
See examples below marked with ^.

  • Needed in the Middle:
'零' must be pronounced if zeros are in the middle of a number sequence, but say it only once even if there are two or more zeros.
See examples below marked with *.

Rule for pronouncing 一(1)

  • 一 is omitted when it is before ten, just as in English.
See examples below marked with #.

Advanced Combination

The process becomes more complex for numbers beyond 100,000. For 100,000 - 99,999,999, you should pronounce the digits to the left of the ten thousand position as if they were a standalone number, then add "萬" and continue with the remaining digits. Similarly, this logic applies to '億'.

In fact, this method closely resembles the way numbers are structured in English, such as "one hundred thousand" or "ten million," where you treat the number in each place value as standalone before it reaches a higher place value.

      200: ()() / ()()
      2000: ()()/ ()()
      20000: ()() / ()()
